. . . or opening old Christmas wounds. Either way.

Inspired by jenifleur in yesterday’s comments (she demands a Super Star Barbie). Did you have a favorite toy around 1978? Or did you beg and beg and beg for something, but never actually get it because your parents were mean and didn’t love you? Tell me what it was (or describe it as best you can) and I’ll see if Santa can find it in the Wish Book for you!

Now, girls, go put on your pretty dresses.

Boys, get your nice new slacks and tops on.

Mommy is going to wear her polyester caftan because once the holiday eating starts, it’s not going to stop until she’s asked to leave for making the rest of the family uncomfortable.

And Daddy is going to wear his new Mix-n-Match suit by Garanimals. I hope he wears the hippo jacket with the marmoset vest and hyena tie. Daddy’s such a stud.

Later on, we’ll change into our new family sleepwear set! The force is with us this year, kids.

Ready? It’s off to grandma and grandpa’s. We all know what grandpa is going to be wearing, right? That crazy, comfort-seeking, leisure-living old coot.

I wonder what grandma got everyone this year.

  2. maryse says:

wow, i really missed out by spending these formative years of the late 70′s in the old country.

    so sad.

  3. Imbrium says:

Um…Christmas of 1978, I’d have to guess that my favorite toy was my mother’s bladder, which I’m sure I had a blast bouncing up and down on. Sorry…I was in utero at that particular moment.

But if you’re willing to venture into the 80s, I think one of my earliest favorite toys was Alphie. That is, until he went crazy and starting talking all by himself in my closet.

  4. Marlena says:

Well, I was only 3 in 1978, but I’ll add that the gift I asked for EVERY. FREAKING. CHRISTMAS and NEVER GOT was the Easy Bake Oven. I begged for that thing. The Barbie Dreamhouse was a close second, but I asked for an Easy Bake Oven until I was like 14.

  5. Stephanie says:

Well I was probably a bit old for them but I still loved under roos. “Because Under Roos are fun to wear, they’re something super new in underwear.”

I was also obsessed with Stretch Armstrong. I’m not sure why it was so much fun mauling that stange doll…

  6. gina says:

Ah! I had that EXACT green and red dress with the kitty on the apron. Whoa, bad 70′s flashback…

  7. Dani says:

Easy Bake Oven, Fashion Plates, and the Mousetrap game. I never got any of them, so I soothed my inner child by getting my eldest daughter an Easy Bake a couple years ago. My eight-year-old just asked me yesterday for Fashion Plates. I guess they have a new version out that I will have to find before her birthday in January so that the cycle can end here :-) .

  8. amy says:

Baby Alive. Which I got but Santa forgot the batteries.

  9. DebR says:

I now officially feel ancient. In 1978 I was 16 years old, so the toy I wanted and didn’t get was a car. I bet even the super Sears wish book didn’t have that. :-)

  10. itgirl says:

A Sit-n-Spin so I could spin until I threw up and an Easy Bake Oven. My mother never let me bake by lightbulb. She made me use the real stove. Bitch. I’ll never forgive her to this day.

  11. Beth says:

What I really wanted, but never got, was one of those big doll heads on a stand with makeup; you were supposed to do her makeup and style her hair. I would lay on the floor with the catalog open in front of me and just dream of my future as a beautician. I also wanted an EasyBake Oven. Sounds like there were a lot of unfulfilled little bakers out there.

  12. melanie says:

I *so* need the family star wars pjs.

  13. Kathy says:

Wow. I had three out of the five little girl dresses pictured. And I was ten at the time. Skeeery times for us all.

  14. Anonymous says:

In 78 I was 24 and my daughter was 3. We had the matching Star Wars pj’s! They were a “special” gift from my sister. Oh, and itchy!!!

Thanks for the laughs and frightening memories.

    Merry Christmas!

  15. elisa says:

My cousin Shawn had those Star Wars pjs and I was *so* jealous. Stupid cousin with the cool pajamas and all the matchbox cars. Harumph.

Merry Christmas, Debbie – all the best to you, Jon, and all the kitties. :)

  16. Maisie (the shamazing lady) says:

Deliciously hideous. I wasn’t born until long after that, actually, but I wish I had been born much earlier so I could have seen what I consider to be the good era of rock music. Merry Christmas.

  17. Mary says:

In 1978 I was 13 and about to finish 8th grade and head on to high school. (Yep, I’m old). Don’t remember what I asked for for Christmas, but it was probably clothes, and who remembers the clothes they get when they’re 13? I did have one of those dresses in that first picture, though, a few years earlier. Lovely, ain’t it?

  18. i was 12 in 1978, and i don’t recall waht i got. i know it was probably clothes, and an apple and nuts in my stocking. something my dad did every year. in fact, i do it with my kids, now, even though one is going to be 20 in january, lol. of course, i dont’ give crappy red delicious apples. i give braeburns to the boys, and a pear to my daughter (she hates apples, lol)

merry christmas, stitchy, and thanks for the memories (not!)

  19. tabbytuxedo says:

    I remember fashion plates!

Oh, and that fisher-price barn sound, I never put it together with When Doves Cry. You’re right! It does sound like the beginning of the song.

  20. Tish says:

    God damn the seventies.

  21. Stacy says:

Why does the mom in the Star Wars pajama picture have a Hippo-sized erection?

  22. Stacy says:

    Oh. That’s her knee. Uh…sorry.
